![]() This new critical edition provides one of the earliest examples of a global catastrophe novel that is part of a flowering of nineteenth-century science fiction. Of its time but also distinctively modern, After London can, in its uneasy expression of Victorian and post-Victorian anxieties about industrial development, urbanisation, natural resources, and climate, be regarded as one of the first novels of the Anthropocene. ![]() ![]() Imagining a mysterious natural catastrophe that plunges its people into a barbaric future, Jefferies' remarkable novel drowns and destroys London and depicts a challenging 'Wild England' dominated by nature and filled with evolved animals and devolved humans. Richard Jefferies' After London is uncanny and intriguing, an adventure story, quest romance, dystopia, and Darwinian novel rolled into one, but also a pioneering work of Victorian science fiction. ![]() A scholarly edition of a significant and exciting late Victorian science fiction novel ![]() ![]() ![]() It is also just a dang good horror! There are grisly parts that make you want to keep turning the pages and you are drawn in to Maddy’s character. It isn’t necessarily an original story (being that it is a retelling), but the references to race and police brutality are incredible. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I also enjoyed the writing style where it would break away from the telling of Maddy’s story and show pieces of interviews from different witnesses of Maddy’s destruction. The whole scene where Kenny is trying to get the police officers involved and how they react….it was beautifully written and heartbreaking. ![]() I was interested to see how Jackson tied in dumping a bucket of something on Maddy’s head, and I was not disappointed to find out what it was and what it symbolized. I really enjoyed the modern take on how race is still an issue in our communities and schools. Jackson, published by HarperCollins (September 6, 2022) is available in hardcover. I have not read Carrie, but I have seen the movies, so I had that as a base to go off of when I was reading ‘The Weight of Blood’. Tiffany Jackson’s newest novel, The Weight of Blood, is a retelling of the King novel, Carrie. ![]() ![]() ![]() Over the last century, physicists have learned a lot about which spiritual ideas are still compatible with the laws of nature. Science and religion have the same roots, and they still tackle some of the same questions: Where do we come from Where do we go to How much can we know The area of science that is closest to answering these questions is physics. According to Sabine Hossenfelder, it is not a coincidence that quantum entanglement and vacuum energy have become the go-to explanations of alternative healers, or that people believe their deceased grandmother is still alive because of quantum mechanics. On the other hand, the idea that the universe itself is conscious is difficult to rule out entirely. The notion that there are universes within particles, or that particles are conscious, is ascientific, as is the hypothesis that our universe is a computer simulation. Neuware -A contrarian scientist wrestles with the big questions that modern physics raises, and what physics says about the human conditionNot only can we not currently explain the origin of the universe, it is questionable we will ever be able to explain it. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Irish band begin to play again in the dance tent – a rousing ditty to restore the spirit of celebration.
